What we do not promise
We have read the brochures of the other orders. We have nothing to add to them.
We do not promise you enlightenment. The word has been ruined. It is the word a company uses when it wishes to sell a weekend retreat and a tea blend. The thing the word once meant — a slow and largely uneventful change in how you sit with the day — is not something a company can promise on your behalf. It can only be arrived at, slowly, by a person who has placed themselves where it might happen.
We do not promise you ascendance. We have no ladder of being to offer you. There is no higher version of you that is waiting to be unlocked. There is the you that you already are, and the you that you may, over years, become. The relationship between these two is not vertical. It is not a climb. It is something more like a slow walk through a landscape that does not change its altitude.
We do not promise you transformation. We have nothing to transform. You did not arrive at this page broken. You arrived at this page intact and in need of a different word for what you already are. We do not have that word either, but we have stopped looking for it. We have replaced the search with a rhythm.
We do not promise community in the sense the marketplace uses the word. We are not a friendly Sunday gathering. We are not a network of accountability partners. We are not a discussion forum with branded merchandise. We are a company of people who have agreed, mostly by silence, on a way to spend their time. The agreement is older than any of us. It will outlive us. It does not require you to like everyone in it.
We do not promise immediate results. We do not promise late results either. There are no results. There is the rhythm, and there is the question of whether you can sustain the rhythm. Some can. Most cannot. Among those who cannot, some realise it quickly and leave; some realise it slowly and leave; some never realise it and stay. We have a name for the last category, but it is not for use here.
What we do offer is smaller and harder than what the brochures offer. We offer purpose — the specific kind of purpose that comes from having a thing to do at a fixed time, with other people, that you would not have done on your own. We offer place — the specific kind of place that comes from being known by a name you chose, in a room where the name is repeated by people who know what it cost you to choose it. We offer path — the specific kind of path that comes from a graded progression that no one outside the company can see and that no one inside the company can buy.
These are the three things, and they are all we have. Purpose. Place. Path. We will not adorn the list. Companies that adorn lists are selling. We are not selling.
